Benalla is a small city, home to more than 14,000, in the High Country of north-eastern Victoria. The Broken River runs through the city and Lake Benalla, which was created in 1973, divides the city and is abutted by the spectacular Benalla Botanical Gardens and Benalla Art Gallery.
To get to Benalla usually means taking the Hume Freeway, which is the main highway between Sydney and Melbourne. While the Freeway bypasses Benalla like other regional cities, many choose to stop in Benalla to break up their journeys and stop for lunch or dinner.
There are some very good cafes in Benalla, and favourites include Main Street Cafe and Polly's Pocket Coffee Co at 123-125 Bridge Street, which in the writer's opinion does the best coffee in town.
